Murkomen vows full support for landslide victims as families bury 8 kin
Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has assured families affected by the Elgeyo Marakwet landslide that the Government will stand with them as they continue to mourn, rebuild, and seek safety after the devastating tragedy.
The landslide, which swept through parts of Marakwet East, left eight people dead and several families displaced. The pain remains fresh in the community, and the emotional weight of the loss was evident as families gathered in Kapchebau for a requiem Mass. Murkomen said he attended the service alongside local leaders, grieving relatives, and friends who gathered to offer comfort and solidarity.

In a statement posted by Murkomen on Facebook on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, Murkomen acknowledged the depth of the tragedy and the lasting wounds it has left on the community. He began his statement by expressing empathy for the grieving families. He stated. “We continue to stand in solemn solidarity with those who lost their loved ones in the Elgeyo Marakwet landslide tragedy, sharing in their pain and grief during this difficult time.”
Murkomen explained that the visit to Kapchebau was not only a moment of mourning but also a reminder of the heavy responsibility the Government carries in ensuring affected families receive proper support. He said he joined leaders, families, and friends at the emotional service.

“Today, I joined leaders, families, and friends at Kapchebau for a requiem Mass for the eight Marakwet East mudslide victims from Embobut and Sambirir wards,” Murkomen stated
Beyond condolences, Murkomen emphasised that the Government’s role goes further. He said the ongoing support must be structured, transparent, and focused on restoring dignity to the affected families.

“We reiterate our commitment to supporting the victims, ensuring fair and transparent compensation, facilitating resettlement in safer areas, and helping affected families rebuild their lives,” Murkomen added
The tragedy has renewed calls for long-term preventive measures, especially in landslide-prone regions such as Elgeyo Marakwet. For now, however, families continue to mourn, and Murkomen’s message signals a promise that they will not face this difficult journey alone.
