Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has pledged government support for the victims of the Sambirir and Embobut areas in Elgeyo Marakwet County after a fatal landslide that claimed over 10 lives on Friday night, October 31, 2025.

Shortly after the catastrophic occurrence due to the ongoing heavy rainfall in most parts of the country, Kipchumba Murkomen assured families who lost properties and loved ones that the government would intervene to offer urgent, humanitarian assistance after the disaster. The particular landslide has made rescue operations difficult in the affected areas after leaving road networks impassable.

Govt’s support

”Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Endo, Sambirir, and Embobut Wards in Marakwet East Constituency following the devastating landslide that has led to the loss of lives and property, as well as the destruction of infrastructure, including the road network,” Murkomen said in a statement on Saturday, November 1, 2025.

The CS revealed that the government has dispatched military helicopters to the area with medical personnel and a Red Cross team to assist amid efforts to restore normalcy. Murkomen also added that both the national government and the county government of Elgeyo Marakwet are working jointly in response to the unfortunate incident.

”The government has dispatched police and military helicopters carrying medical personnel and Red Cross staff to assist in the ongoing search and rescue operations. We are working with the county government and non-state actors to respond to this unfortunate incident and provide the necessary support to the affected families. Efforts are underway to restore the destroyed road network to facilitate movement and access for emergency and relief operations,” Murkomen said.

Messages of condolence

Following the natural calamity, leaders have joined other Kenyans in sending condolences to the bereaved families and wishing speedy recovery to the survivors. Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei was among the elected leaders who sent his message to those affected by the landslide.
