Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has pledged that Laikipia and other regions historically affected by banditry will enjoy lasting peace and stability, while calling on those with illegal firearms to surrender them voluntarily.

In a statement posted on his X account on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, following the commissioning of the Laikipia County Police Headquarters in Rumuruti, Murkomen said the government will continue to intensify security operations and open up the region for development.

“We will ensure that Laikipia and other areas that have historically faced the threat of banditry enjoy lasting peace and stability,” the CS said.

While extending an olive branch to armed residents, the Interior CS emphasised the government’s commitment to lasting peace.

“As we celebrate the gains we have made in the fight against banditry, we call upon those still in possession of illegal firearms to take our olive branch and surrender them voluntarily,” he stated.

Intensified security operations

Murkomen announced that security operations will be stepped up to consolidate gains made in the fight against banditry.

“We will continue to intensify our security operations and open up the region for development,” he stated.

The Cabinet Secretary further disclosed an escalation in the government’s fight against alcohol and drug abuse, which he described as a serious threat to the nation.

“We are also stepping up our fight against alcohol and drug abuse, which poses a serious socioeconomic threat to our nation,” he added.

New police headquarters commissioned

Speaking on the newly commissioned Laikipia County Police Headquarters in Rumuruti, Murkomen said the facility will play a crucial role in sustaining peace and promoting development.

“We commend MPs for supporting our security modernisation programme by constructing critical infrastructure through NG-CDF. The facility, constructed by the Laikipia West NG-CDF, will go a long way in consolidating the gains we have made in bringing peace to the region,” he stated.

The commissioning event was attended by President William Ruto, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, and other national and county leaders.
