Interior Cabinet Secretary, Kipchumba Murkomen, has said the Government of Kenya is going to invest heavily in national security agencies to fight against the menace of drug and substance abuse across the country.

Speaking at Saboti in Trans Nzoia on Friday, December 26, 2025, during the finals of a football tournament sponsored by the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Gilbert Masengeli, Murkomen said the Ministry of Interior and National Administration is committed to destroying all the networks of illicit brews and other dangerous drugs.

“As a country and department, we are very keen on dealing with the challenge of illicit brews, and that is why in the coming year we are going to invest more in national security,” Murkomen stated.

The powerful CS revealed that the business of illicit brews thrives well in Trans Nzoia County due to the porous border between Kenya and Uganda.

“It is true that we have a very porous border but going forward, we are going to have a multi-agency security operation. We equally need the support of our people because we all have a responsibility in the fight against this menace,” he added.

To enhance the efficiency of the security agencies, Murkomen CS stated that the government is banking on the skills of the recently recruited 10,000 police officers.

While lauding the efforts of security officers for maintaining peace during the festive season, the CS decried the rise in cases of road accidents.

“Road safety is still a big challenge, and we have had bad experiences. We are asking motorists and road users to observe traffic rules,” he said.

Meanwhile, amid escalating tensions in the Kerio Valley area, the government has announced plans to involve the Kenya Defence Forces in the peace-keeping mission, albeit via training facilities.

On Thursday, December 25, 2025, the government announced that starting January 2026, it would embark on the establishment of training grounds for different forces, including the KDF, within the Kerio Valley region

According to Murkomen, the training grounds, which have already been approved by President William Ruto, will serve both the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the National Police Service (NPS), who will work hand in hand to ensure security in the region.

“As part of the efforts to make this peace, we shall be establishing permanent security installations of different nature, either an operational base for some of the formed up units,” the CS said.

The CS further appreciated political leaders and other government officials for keeping youths engaged during the long December holiday through sporting activities.
