Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has declared parts of Narok County as security disturbed and dangerous, imposing a 30-day security alert in affected areas.

In a special Kenya Gazette notice dated December 19, 2025, CS Murkomen invoked section 106 (1) of the National Police Service Act, 2011, following consultations with the National Security Council to make the declaration.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 106 (1) of the National Police Service Act, 2011, the Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, in consultation with the National Security Council, has made a declaration on 19th December, 2025, declaring parts of Narok County as security disturbed and dangerous,” the gazette notice stated.

Affected areas

The declaration covers multiple locations across two sub-counties in Narok County, with the gazette notice listing specific areas deemed security disturbed and dangerous.

According to the notice, the affected areas include “Trans Mara West Nkaroru” and in Transmara South: “Oldonyo-Orok, Siteti, Ololoma, Corner, Ratiki, Isokon, Kerinkani, Kondamet, Olkiloriti, Angata Barakoi, Kapkeres, Lolgorian Town, Mashangwa.”

The gazette notice further specified the duration and conditions of the security declaration.

“This notice shall take effect on the 19th December, 2025, as from 6.00 p.m., for a period of thirty (30) days and may, at any time, be withdrawn or continued in force for such further period as the Cabinet Secretary may, in each case, by notice in the Kenya Gazette direct,” the notice stated.

Explaining the move, Murkomen stated the declaration would allow for intensified security operations and targeted peace-building interventions.

“A dawn-to-dusk curfew is already in force, and security presence in the affected areas has been significantly enhanced. Calm is gradually returning, even as we continue engaging local leaders and security stakeholders to address the root causes of the conflict,” Murkomen said in a statement posted on his X account on December 22, 2025.

“The Government remains committed to ensuring that the communities, which have for a long time lived together in peace and harmony, bring an end to the current animosities and fully embrace peaceful coexistence,” he added.

Angata Barikoi clashes

The move follows recent tribal clashes in Angata Barikoi, Trans Mara South, which have displaced more than 1,800 residents.

In a statement dated December 20, 2025, the Kenya Red Cross announced that over 253 households were destroyed in just three days, forcing families to seek shelter in schools, dispensaries, and open areas, with some sleeping under trees.
