Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has confirmed that the government is making arrangements to purchase additional police vehicles to strengthen patrol efforts across the country.

Speaking during the Jukwaa la Usalama forum held in Kiambu County on Monday, August 18, 2025, Murkomen revealed that the procurement process is already underway and the Treasury is expected to conclude it by October or, at the latest, November this year.

“Leaders have also raised issues about police vehicles. As I have told you, we are doing the procurement now. Hopefully, Treasury will complete soon so that by October or November, we should have our police station vehicles.” Murkomen stated

He acknowledged that it may not be possible to supply all police stations with vehicles immediately. However, the initiative is designed to significantly reduce the number of stations that currently operate without patrol vehicles.

“We cannot have all police stations having vehicles, but if we can reduce the number of police stations having vehicles, it will be good,” he added.

The matter was raised after Ruiru MP Simon King’ara highlighted concerns over Githurai Police Station, which has been operating without a patrol vehicle since its only one was destroyed during protests. In response, the CS directed Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat to allocate a vehicle to Githurai within two weeks, emphasising the urgency due to the area’s dense population and need for effective security presence.

In addition to vehicles for police stations, Murkomen explained that chiefs across the country will also be supported with motorcycles to enhance service delivery within communities.

“This will also apply to chiefs,” he added.

Police being nonpartisan

He also went ahead to assure the public that the police will not be allowed to engage in politics or talking sides in politics, saying that the function of police officers is to support the government of the day, with them making their arrests with fear or favour

He went ahead to state that every leader will be held accountable regardless of their political affiliation.
