Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has called for firm policy measures to address alcohol and drug abuse among teachers, warning that the problem undermines discipline and affects the quality of education in schools.

In a statement made during the inaugural Elgeyo-Marakwet Elimu Conference held at the Lorna Kiplagat Academy in Iten on Friday, March 13, 2026, Murkomen pointed out the need to protect learning environments and ensure teachers remain responsible role models for students.

The CS stressed that the government and education stakeholders must establish clear guidelines on how to handle cases involving teachers struggling with addiction.

“We need to have a clear policy on how to deal with addicted teachers,” CS Kipchumba Murkomen said.

Murkomen said teachers play a central role in shaping the future of learners and any form of substance abuse among educators risks weakening discipline and mentorship in schools.

“We can’t have addicted teachers and expect them to deliver to our students,” the CS stated.

He added that addressing the issue requires a coordinated effort between government agencies, education institutions and other stakeholders in order to restore professionalism and accountability within the teaching sector.

Murkomen said the government will continue strengthening enforcement of regulations while promoting discipline among teachers and learners across the country.

The CS reiterated that tackling alcohol and drug abuse remains a key priority in efforts to protect young people and improve the overall quality of education in the country.

Nationwide virtual summit for all public school leaders

Elsewhere, the Head of Public Service, Felix kosgei, held a virtual meeting bringing together school leaders from every public primary schools in the country. The session aimed to review leadership, accountability, and strategies for improving school governance and learner welfare.

During the discussions, Koskei outlined measures to improve governance and enhance accountability in school management. He also emphasised the need for leaders to uphold high professional standards while fostering a learning environment that prioritises both academic excellence and discipline.

“Our discussions focused on strengthening school governance, reinforcing financial discipline and accountability in the management of public resources, safeguarding learner welfare, and ensuring that school leadership upholds high standards of professionalism.

“We also emphasised the responsibility of institutional leadership to sustain academic excellence, maintain discipline, and work closely with Boards of Management and parents to advance quality basic education for every learner,” Felix Koskei stated.
