A middle aged man from Kiangoru village in Kiharu Murang’a died after walls of a quarry where he was harvesting sand caved in.

Kamau Mugechi, 28, is said to have gone to the quarry on Sunday morning when the incident happened.

According to witneses Kamau was deep into the tunnel when a huge chunk of sand above him came crumbling down.

Efforts to save him were futile as it took the rescuers hours to reach him.

Susan Wambui a relative to the deceased said the heavy rains, which have been pounding the area, could have contributed to the tragic incident.

“I got a call from my neighbor who told me Kamau had been buried in the sand, but it we could not save him,” she said.
