Kitui Central Member of Parliament (MP) Makali Mulu has chastised President William Ruto’s governance, faulting him for failing to actualise his promises.

Speaking during an interview with a local TV station on Tuesday, March 18, 2025, MP Mulu voiced his dissatisfaction with Ruto’s governance noting that the president has a tendency of promising more than he can fulfil to hoodwink citizens.

In his reasoning, Mulu asserted that the move is aimed at stroking and massaging the feelings of citizens who have persistently expressed discontent with his administration.

“President Ruto can hardly sit in his office; he is all over the place, and anytime you face the voters they will always keep telling you ‘Mr President we don’t have this and that’. Ruto makes promises whether they will be implemented or not, just to manage Kenyans’ feelings,” he said.

At the same time, the lawmaker poked at Ruto’s changes in key policies such as the healthcare system as well as the education system. He notes that the rushed implementation of new policies has led to the growing challenges that have been witnessed in the system.

“They thought everything that had beenh happening for the last 60 years was wrong. They changed the education system, the funding model and changed NHIF to SHA. They have been biting more than they can swallow and it will hang somewhere,” he added.

Mulu’s remarks come amid sustained criticism on the country’s health care and education sector with various Kenyans including leaders from across the political divide, calling for urgent reforms that will address the challenges voiced by the public.

Following the outcry, SHA announced various key measures to rectify some issues in the sector, however, citizens have still raised concern about the efficiency and reliability of the scheme.

Students, parents and education stakeholders on the other hand, have voiced their concern over the new funding model reiterating the ineffectiveness of the ‘means testing instrument’. They also argue that the model will lock out many students from acquiring higher education.

Regardless of the complaints, the Ruto-led government has maintained its stance on its policies, maintaining that it is for the good of the country.
