Mudavadi engages UN on public participation bill

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi on Monday, April 28, 2025, engaged a team from the United Nations (UN) Kenya team on the Public Participation Bill.
Taking to his official X account, Mudavadi stated that his discussions with the UN team centred on finalising the bill.
Mudavadi said that the Public Participation Bill is aimed at reducing financial and time costs while harnessing technology to broaden civic involvement.
UN Annual report
The Foreign and Diaspora Affairs CS further noted that he had received the UN Kenya 2024 Annual Results Report from Resident Coordinator Stephen Jackson and his country team.
“Kenya remains committed to strengthening citizen engagement through a cost-effective and impactful public participation framework. This afternoon, I received the UN Kenya 2024 Annual Results Report from Resident Coordinator @SWJacksonUN and the @UN Country Team. Our discussions centred on finalising the Public Participation Bill, aimed at reducing financial and time costs while harnessing technology to broaden civic involvement,” Mudavadi stated.

Mudavadi further noted that he had emphasised the importance of balancing constitutional obligations with national development goals.
“I underscored the importance of balancing constitutional obligations with national development goals and welcomed the UN’s continued support in advancing this vital reform. Also present was PS for National Government Coordination, Ahmed Abdisalan,” Mudavadi stated.
Public Participation Bill
The National Assembly Leader of the majority Party, Kimani Ichung’wah, is sponsoring the Public Participation Bill, 2024, that seeks to provide a framework for effective public participation.
The Bill seeks to give effect to the constitutional principles of public participation and participatory democracy as enunciated in Articles 1, 10, 35, 69, 118, 174, 184, 196, 201, and 232.
It further provides guiding principles to be adhered to by institutions conducting public participation and also designates the responsible authorities for purposes of developing specific guidelines for public participation in each public institution.
