MPs applaud Kenya’s defence sector for enhancing national security and EAC cooperation
By Ndiritu Wanjiru, April 29, 2026The Regional Integration Committee of the National Assembly has praised the State Department for Defence for its efforts in ensuring peace and stability in the country.
Taking it to their social media handles on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, the parliament noted that the committee, under the leadership of Irene Mayaka, commended the principal secretary, Patrick Mariru, and his technical team for their efforts in improving national security and fostering regional collaborations. The MPs, who were enquiring into the joint military training among East African Community member states, were pleased with the work done.
The committee observed that the fact that Kenya is at relative peace is an indication of a strong intelligence system and good cooperation with other nations. Makali Mulu said sharing information promptly is crucial in maintaining peace in the region.
“Kenya is still peaceful, which demonstrates our intelligence is effective. Enhanced collaboration with our neighbours will ensure peace in the region,” Mulu said.

Mariru commends KDF in peacekeeping efforts
In his speech, Mariru outlined concerted efforts in the defence sector to keep the country safe. He said the armed forces are vital to Kenya’s security, but their efforts are often behind the scenes despite the risks they face.
“Our uniform personnel do a lot behind the scenes to ensure security. Their sacrifice and commitment have enabled us to enjoy the peace and stability that we have today,” Mariru said.

“There was a time we were doing very badly; today we have peace. Having worked with uniformed men and women, I can assure you it’s intense; they sacrifice a lot. Our military personnel are doing a lot to give us the peace we are enjoying daily; most of the work they do is not reported, but we celebrate them,” Mariru added.
The committee was also briefed on the various joint initiatives between the Kenyan defence forces and regional and global partners. These include training, intelligence sharing, counterterrorism, capacity building, peace support operations and military exchanges.
The discussion confirmed that for Kenya, regional integration and security are essential elements in fostering long-term peace and stability in the country and region.
