National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has revealed that Kenya and Iran are exploring collaboration in military and oil exploration.

Wetang’ula made the comments after meeting the Iraqi ambassador to the country, Akram Jameel Slaiman, on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, in Parliament.

“This morning, I hosted Akram Jameel Slaiman, the Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq, who paid me a courtesy visit at my office in the Parliament buildings,” Wetang’ula said in a statement on X.

“We explored avenues for collaboration in peace and diplomacy, with the objective of not only enhancing bilateral relations but also driving economic progress. Akram highlighted Iraq’s flourishing oil and gas sector as a potential area for Kenya to benefit from, while also emphasizing the importance of investment in security and military intelligence.”

Kenya, US collaboration

Wetangu’la’s comments come just slightly over a month since Kenya and the United States entered into a military agreement that saw the East African nation designated as a non-NATO allied member.

This was reached after President William Ruto made a state visit to the US. The US then lauded Kenya for hosting and participating in some of the largest US military exercises in Africa. These exercises included Exercise Justified Accord, the second largest US military exercise in Africa, and Exercise Cutclass Express, which focuses on building interoperability amongst multinational partners in the maritime environment.

“The US military currently has seven advisors in Kenya supporting Kenyan aviators, and for the first time, the United States is providing a Strategic Logistics Advisor to Kenya’s Ministry of Defense.  Kenya’s U.S.-trained Disaster Response Battalion has also been involved in recent search and rescue operations in response to recent flooding in Kenya,” a statement from the White House read during Ruto’s visit.
