Moses Kuria explains why Maurice Ogeta should not return as VIP bodyguard after Raila’s death

Former President William Ruto’s economic advisor, Moses Kuria, has come out to explain why Maurice Ogeta, the bodyguard to the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, should not continue with his VIP protection role following his former boss’s demise.

Speaking during an interview with online media channels on Monday, December 15, 2025, after visiting Ogeta’s family in Kisumu, Uyoma Village, Kuria noted that Maurice Ogeta, who served Raila Odinga as his personal bodyguard for over 28 years, should now transition from his VIP protection role and focus on mentoring others with similar aspirations.

According to the former Gatundu South lawmaker, if Ogeta were to continue as a VIP bodyguard, he would be diminishing himself and falling below the standards set by his former boss, Raila Odinga. Kuria argued that Ogeta can only rise above, as, in his view, no one in Kenya can match Raila’s stature.

Continuing in the role, he said, would be akin to lowering himself in a way that Raila would not have approved of, suggesting that Raila would be upset if he were to witness Ogeta guarding someone of lower standing.

“Maurice Ogeta should impact other people. I think that is what Baba would have wanted. If Baba came back and found Maurice guarding a small person, Baba would be very upset. Nobody deserves Maurice Ogeta.”

Kuria further stated that he and other friends of Ogeta have decided to contribute funds to establish a VIP protection academy. This would allow Ogeta to continue pursuing his passion for VIP protection in a different capacity, rather than returning to direct service.

“That is why I am determined that Maurice should do what he loves, and that is why his friends want to come together and set up a VIP protection business so that he can impact other people,” Kuria stated.

He clarified that the idea of the academy was Ogeta’s suggestion, not his own, and affirmed that he would fully support it.

Ogeta’s reaction to Raila’s death

Ogeta, who was deeply affected by the death of the late premier, had been visibly overwhelmed with emotions.

He was with Raila in India when he passed away, and during the funeral, Ogeta remained close to Raila’s body, even amid heavy military presence, as if keeping watch over him in life.

Kuria added that while many were focused on visiting Kang’o ka Jaramogi, few had considered the emotional state of Ogeta, who had known no other boss besides Raila and had always remained in his company.

This, according to Kuria, informed his decision to visit Ogeta at his home.
