PHOTOS: Swearing-in ceremonies for Mombasa, Kakamega governors-elect underway

Kakamega governor-elect Fernandes Barasa and his Mombasa counterpart Abdulswamad Nasir will be sworn in today Thursday, September 15, 2022.
Barasa’s swearing-in ceremony is currently ongoing at the Bukhungu stadium.
Mombasa governor-elect Abdulswamad Nasir will take the oath of office at the Mama Ngina Waterfront.
The two governors must be sworn in between 10 am and 2 pm. The assumption for office law is set within the 10 am- 2 pm timeline for transparency and openness.
Nasir and Barasa are the only two governors to be sworn in today. The other 45 governors were all sworn in on August 25, 2022.
The elections in the Mombasa and Kakamega counties were delayed following a mix-up in the printing of ballot papers.
Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) held elections in the two counties on August 29, 2022.
The Kakamega governor-elect, who contested on an Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party ticket, garnered 192,929 votes, trouncing his opponent Cleophas Malala of ANC who got 159,508.
Mombasa governor-elect, who also vied on an ODM ticket, garnered 119,082 votes trouncing his main challenger United Democratic Alliance (UDA’s) Hassan Omar who had 98,180 votes.
