Mombasa governor Abdulsmadad Sharrif has lauded the resumption of the Mombasa Commuter Rail Service, attributing the development to their decision to end political wrangles and infighting with the government.

Speaking on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, during the commissioning of the Mombasa Commuter train service, the governor noted that such a venture proved successful after they agreed to bury the hatchet and focus on development.

“Had we been people who like fights and wrangles, we would not have had this commuter train. We would not have the goods we are seeing today,” he stated.
The governor also appealed to the residents to exploit the new venture and uplift their livelihoods.

“Instead of being diverted by others saying one thing and others saying a different thing. Let us be focused on the people,” he added.

He specifically detailed the economic gains, stressing that the ease of transportation of both people and commodities would boost the county
s economy.

His remarks came after President William Ruto on Wednesday, September 16, 2025, officially commissioned the Mombasa commuter Rail Service, marking the rebirth of the passenger train service from the city’s terminus to the central business district.

The passenger service train to Mombasa on the Lunatic Line had made its last trip on April 29, 2017.

Linking the Mombasa Island to the Mombasa Mainland via the Makupa Causeway Railway Bridge, the service is designed to offer an affordable, reliable and efficient service.

It is also expected to enhance urban mobility, connectivity and convenience for residents and visitors in Mombasa.
