Meru: Police intercept motorcycle ferrying 80 litres of illicit liquor
Police in Maua, Meru County, have intercepted a motorcycle transporting 80 litres of illicit liquor during a routine patrol in Antubochiuo Location, Igembe South Sub-County.
According to the NPS statement on Thursday, August 21, 2025, officers from Maua Police Station flagged down the motorcycle yesterday, August 19, 2025, only to discover it was loaded with four jerricans of a locally brewed substance known as Naisu.
The rider managed to escape on foot, abandoning both the motorcycle and the illegal cargo. Police later impounded the motorcycle, and the liquor was taken into custody as evidence.
Confirming the incident, the National Police Service (NPS) reiterated its commitment to cracking down on illicit brews and narcotic substances, warning that such products pose a serious risk to public health and safety.
Other operations
Elsewhere, on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, National Police Officers from Rodi Police Station, while on patrol, flagged down a motorbike rider carrying a suspicious package.
Upon searching the package, they discovered 98 large rolls of cannabis sativa. One man was arrested and is being held in custody at Rodi Police Station, awaiting processing and arraignment in court. On Tuesday, August 19, 2025, officers from the National Police Service based at Garissa Police Station acted on intelligence and arrested a man linked to narcotics peddling in the Ziwani area of Garissa Town.
Upon searching him, they found 20 balls of cannabis sativa in a red carrier bag and Ksh1,800 in various denominations, which are suspected to be proceeds from the sale of the drugs. The man was placed in custody at Garissa Police Station, awaiting processing and arraignment in court. The cannabis was secured as an exhibit at the same station.
These developments come as authorities across the country intensify efforts to dismantle networks involved in the manufacture, distribution, and sale of illegal alcohol, which has been linked to rising cases of health complications and fatalities.
