Samuel “Sammyboy” Ondieki is a full-time fashion influencer, whose love for impeccable looks is unmatched. Adalla Allan caught up with him to shed more light on his style code

Describe your style? 

One word; sophisticated. I have always had a soft spot for casual and modern wear. I do a lot of casual outdoor events, which goes well with casual dressing.

My choice for any party or event is something preferably elegant. I like choosing pieces that are modern and unique.

I choose in a manner that speaks to my sophisticated fashion style. With many years of experience in putting together looks, I know what works and what doesn’t. 

How do you keep yourself updated on the new trends in fashion? 

I keep on top of the game through social media. Social media has become a great tool for fostering fashion.

I am also a staunch fan of attending fashion events, from where I get new fashion ideas. Similarly, I also study my friends’ style for inspiration.

Are you running a fashion business?

 Not yet, but it’s on my bucket list. Soon we are planning to partner with a friend who is also a fashion enthusiast to set up one, especially a male elegant sneakers business. 

What’s your take about the current fashion industry in Kenya?

We are doing well so far. With healthy competition and government support such as introducing subsidies in the fashion sector would help us achieve the ‘Buy Kenya Build Kenya’ initiative. But I believe we are on the right track already.

Do you think the way you dress has played a big part in you being ranked so high by the fashion pundits?  

Yes, I believe so. It has undoubtedly played 99 per cent of it. As the wise men say, your clothes speak long before you do. What that means is that whether you say a word or not, what you’re wearing is talking. You might have heard that your first impression matters alot.

The way you dress sends multiple messages. Dressing well will make you stand out and be the subject in every place you step at. Dressing well makes it easier for one to make friendships and also attracts new friends to you.

What would you tell someone who wants to be a fashion influencer?

How you dress defines your confidence. Your dressing code will define you even before you start talking. People will judge you according to your looks. So, dress to impress and start to influence.

Which fashion icons do you look up to? 

My style is drawn from international artistes including American rappers Asap Rocky, Kanye West and Travis Scott.

What is the biggest fashion mistake men make?

Over-accessorising is one major mistake men make. Too much of something is poisonous. When it comes to style, less is often more. Pick one or two accessories and make it your signature look.

If you find yourself becoming a watch aficionado, you can probably stand to skip the bracelets and rings. Also, I think it lowers one’s dignity when they wear brand imitations.

There are many brand imitations, and they are easy to tell that they are not original. Just go for the original brand and this will even make you look more elegant.

Do you have a fashion item that you can’t get out of the house without? 

I can’t get out of my house without a watch and wearing some perfume. They complete my look.
