Meet Okhagbe Friday Arigamhe aka FayRoss – a rising Nigerian singer-songwriter, producer
Okhagbe Friday Arigamhe aka FayRoss is a rising Nigerian singer-songwriter and producer, who was recently signed by acclaimed Jamaican group Morgan Heritage during a talent search across Africa. Besides his bright musical career, he is also fashion-forward. He speaks to Chebet Korir on everything about his style.
How was the journey like being discovered by Morgan Heritage?
It happened that my label1A1V Music had contacted the management of Morgan Heritage just to listen to my songs and also give an honest opinion about my music.
Luckily, after listening to my music, they immediately fell in love with my sound. After a few months, they decided to partner with my label and make my music international.
Tell us about your enthusiasm for fashion.
I came from a family that loves music and fashion. My elder brother, to be specific, is a music producer and a lover of fashion.
While growing up, I watched him and how his style evolved, which I followed suit as I grew older and decided to focus on my music career and also pay attention to the little fashion details that I knew.
Back then before I stepped out, I would inquire from him if I looked okay; he would change a few things here and there, which I later appreciated.
There’s a saying that goes like that you are addressed the way you are dressed and I love looking good all the time.
How do you settle on a look when dressing up for the day?
The answer is in the mirror. If the mirror tells me that I don’t look good, I change and go through the process over and over again until I am comfortable.
Does your style reveal your personality and lifestyle?
I think it does. Naturally, I am a humble and cool person. So, when I dress up I try to be simple and unique. That may tell the kind of person I am.
So, how is someone’s looks affected by the right or wrong outfit?
I keep telling people this; even if you look good, wearing the wrong clothes can make you look bad. Good clothes will always give you confidence.
What fashion items do you splurge on?
Shirts and shoes. I also believe these are the first things people look at when they meet you for the first time. First impressions you know.
Fashion items you often wear…
White shirts and gold chains. They go well together.
What’s the most treasured item in your wardrobe?
My shoes. I have close to 60 pairs and I make sure they are always clean.
Who’s your style icon?
My elder brother. He is so into details, patterns and colours, which I have grown to love and embrace.
What’s the most outrages piece of fashion advice you have ever received?
Someone once advised me to go on stage with my undergarments; that I would create buzz that way. I did not do it, but some people go to such extents just for publicity.
We’ll never catch you dead wearing…
Canvas on Agbada (Agbada is a flowing wide-sleeved robe worn by men in much of West Africa).
What is your style secret weapon?
I love shopping at different outlets and also working with different designers. This way you get unique looks.
