The National Treasury has announced that Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi will unveil the budget statement for the financial year 2025/26 on Thursday, June 12, 2025.

In a public notice seen on June 4, 2025, the budget statement will be delivered by the Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury and Economic Planning, John Mbadi.

“This is to notify the general public that the budget statement for FY 2025/26 will be delivered by the Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury and Economic Planning on Thursday, 12, 2025, from 3:00 pm in parliament,” part of the public notice read.

The budget statement is expected to address critical areas such as economic recovery, job creation, infrastructure development, and social protection programs.

On April 30, 2025, the National Treasury Cabinet Secretary tabled the 136-page draft before the National Assembly. Speaker Moses Wetang’ula then referred it to the Departmental Committee on Finance and National Planning for review and public participation, in line with Article 118 of the Kenyan Constitution.

The public participation phase, a crucial part of the legislative process, began in May 2025, with initial hearings held at venues such as the Edge Convention Centre in Nairobi. Additional consultations across ten counties are scheduled to start on July 2, 2025.

This annual budget statement is a key milestone in Kenya’s economic planning cycle, outlining the government’s spending priorities and revenue-raising measures for the upcoming financial year. The presentation will set the tone for parliamentary debate and, eventually, the approval of the budget by lawmakers.

The upcoming budget comes at a time when Kenyans are grappling with high inflation, unemployment, and the need for inclusive economic growth. It will be closely watched by citizens, businesses, and investors eager to understand the government’s policy direction and commitment to fostering a robust economy.

Mbadi is expected to outline measures aimed at promoting fiscal discipline, enhancing revenue collection, and reducing public debt. This will be his first budget statement since taking office, making it a crucial test of his stewardship at the Treasury.

The budget statement’s delivery is part of the constitutional and legal obligations of the government to ensure transparency and accountability in public finance management. It is also a significant opportunity for the public to understand how the government intends to allocate resources to priority sectors.

Kenyans are encouraged to follow the budget presentation to stay informed about the nation’s economic trajectory and how it may impact their livelihoods.
