The Cabinet Secretary for the National Treasury, John Mbadi, has ordered the immediate removal of former Kirinyaga Woman Representative Purity Wangui Ngirici as Chairperson of the Board of Kenya Seed Company Limited.

In a formal letter dated April 30, 2026, addressed to the company’s managing director Sammy Chepsiror, the Treasury instructed that Ngirici be removed from both her position as director and board chair “with immediate effect”.

The directive references provisions within the company’s Articles of Association, specifically Articles 80, 97, and 98, which outline the appointment, management, and removal of directors.

“As you are aware, the Kenya Seed Company Limited is established under the Company’s Act Cap 489, to carry out and manage the business of Seed production in Kenya. Article 80 of the Company’s Articles of Association provides for appointment of Directors, who shall have the power to manage and oversee the Company’s business,” Mbadi’s letter states.

“Further, Article 97 of the establishing instrument, provides the procedure for removal of a Director, while Article 98 empowers the Company or sponsor to replace and/or remove a Director. In line with the above provisions in the Articles of Association, you are hereby advised to process the immediate removal of Ms. Purity Wangui Ngirici as Director and Chairman of the Board as appointed under Article 102 of the Articles of Association.”

Further guidance

The Treasury further indicated that additional guidance on the matter would be provided later, signalling that the decision may be part of a broader restructuring or governance action.

“Please note the instructions are to be effected immediately. Further guidance on the same will be provided in due course,” the letter reads.

Political undertones emerge

While the official communication does not state reasons for Ngirici’s removal, the move comes just a day after she publicly ditched the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).

Ngirici had on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, publicly declared her political shift, announcing that she had left the President William Ruto-led party to support the opposition outfit as she announced her Kirinyaga gubernatorial bid in 2027.

Speaking at Kanjai in Ndia Constituency, Ngirici said she is open to joining the DCP, PLP, Jubilee, or DP parties.

“I will join any of those so long as it is in the opposition,” she said.

She stressed that Kirinyaga residents will not be sold out politically and will elect leaders of their choice.

“Some people should stop asking for votes while hiding behind other leaders. I will ask for the governor’s seat in 2027, and I will not be behind anybody,” she told residents.

Ngirici finished second in the 2022 Kirinyaga gubernatorial race in which she ran as an independent candidate after her opponent, Anne Waiguru, joined UDA. She garnered 105,677 votes while her main challenger, the incumbent governor Waiguru, emerged victorious with 113,088 votes.
