Mbadi dismisses Gachagua-Kalonzo opposition, declares 2027 walkover for Ruto and Raila

Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi has dismissed the opposition led by former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua and Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka as spineless.

The former MP has declared that the 2027 general election will be an easy victory for President William Ruto and Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

In an X post dated August 17, 2025, during a community engagement and inclusivity drive in Bura Constituency, Tana River County, Mbadi expressed confidence in the stability of the broad-based government and the political strength of a Ruto-Raila alliance.

Ruto na Raila wakishikana hakuna mtu atawashinda, na Mbadi akue hapo. The opposition has no spine,” he said.

Broad-based govt here to stay

Mbadi underscored his remarks by recounting past expectations that Raila Odinga would ascend to State House in 2022.

Tulikuwa tunatarajia tutapata kiti ya State House. Raila alikuwa na ufunguo ya State House tutachukua. Wacha ifike 2022, nilishangaa nikikuletea ufunguo huko Kasarani,” he said.

He contrasted that period with the current political climate, noting that President Ruto’s leadership has ushered in a new era of inclusivity and collaboration.

Hatutoki! We are in a broad-based government to stay,” he declared, emphasising the administration’s commitment to national unity and grassroots engagement.

The Treasury boss further assured that the government’s approach is not limited to Nairobi but extends to all regions, with leaders ready to demonstrate their political prowess at the grassroots level. “Tutawaonyesha kivumbi, tutawaonyesha siasa iko na wenyewe,” Mbadi added.

Ppolitical kingpin

Mbadi’s declaration comes against the backdrop of heightened political realignments and ongoing debates on the future of the broad-based government. While critics argue that the arrangement blurs governance and accountability lines, proponents say it has fostered inclusivity and eased political tensions.

Just a week earlier, during the burial of veteran politician Phoebe Asiyo in Homa Bay County, Mbadi reinforced his loyalty to Raila Odinga, describing him as the undisputed leader of the Luo community and the ODM party.

“As the Luo community, we have one king, Raila, and he is the one who will give direction on where we will go as a community,” Mbadi stated, dismissing dissenting voices within the party.

His remarks suggest a deepening consolidation of power between key Azimio leaders and President Ruto’s administration, signalling a potential reshaping of the 2027 electoral contest. By rallying behind Raila and embracing Ruto’s leadership, Mbadi believes the broad-based government has positioned itself for dominance in the upcoming elections.
