Here is what you need to know to keep up to speed with today’s happenings.
Madaraka Day preparation
Preparations for the Madaraka Day celebrations set for Sunday, June 1, 2025, at the Raila Odinga Stadium are in top gear.
President William Ruto will lead the nation during the fete in Homa Bay. The preparations are mainly carried out by the Kenya Defence Forces, and on Thursday, the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Charles Kahariri, and Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga assessed the preparations.
The National Celebrations Steering Committee is overseeing the final Madaraka Day rehearsals.
State Department for Internal Security and National Administration Raymond Omollo has also visited the site for assessment.
“Our tour extended to key strategic sites, including Tom Mboya University and the Homa Bay Pier, as part of broader logistical and operational planning.
“We reviewed ongoing preparations, assessed infrastructure readiness, and engaged with National Government Administration Officers (NGAOs) teams to ensure seamless coordination,” Omollo said.
Ruto in Nyanza
Ahead of the Madaraka Day celebrations, President Ruto has been in Nyanza for a development tour for three days.
On Friday, May 30, 2025, he was at Tom Mboya University, where he officially closed the Blue Economy Summit.
He also commissioned the Boma Yangu Homa Bay Housing Estate Phase I, where 110 affordable housing units were handed over to beneficiaries as part of a broader national agenda to enhance access to decent, dignified housing.
The president launched the modern Homa Bay Fish Market, designed to support over 400 traders and streamline fish handling and distribution.
Ruto also launched the Homa Bay Pier, an infrastructural investment aimed at improving transport, trade, and connectivity along Lake Victoria.
The president also commissioned the Yao Kosiga Dam, which is expected to expand water access for agriculture, institutional, and domestic use.
