Weather update

The Kenya Meteorological Department has projected that rainfall will persist across various regions of the country today, Wednesday, May 14, 2025, with a continued wet spell anticipated particularly over the Central Highlands—including the capital city Nairobi—as well as the Lake Victoria Basin, parts of the expansive Rift Valley, and several pockets of Western Kenya.

The weather department, in a statement yesterday, May 13, 2025, warned that the second half of the week, which starts today, is expected to usher in more wet conditions, with both the intensity and spread of rainfall predicted to ease significantly as the weekend approaches.

Meanwhile, temperatures across the country will continue to reflect the shifting balance between seasonal warmth and emerging cold spells, painting a picture of a nation caught between contrasting climatic extremes.

Sweltering daytime highs exceeding 30 degrees Celsius are forecast to dominate much of the Coast, the sun-scorched plains of North-eastern Kenya, and the arid stretches of the North-western region, where residents should anticipate prolonged sunshine and a heightened risk of dehydration and heat-related discomfort.

“Rainfall is expected to continue over a few regions, most notably the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley,” it stated.

Conversely, as night falls, the mercury is expected to plummet in several high-altitude areas, with chilling night-time lows dipping below 10 degrees Celsius—especially in the Central Highlands, the Central Rift Valley, and around the snow-kissed foothills of Mt. Kilimanjaro. These cooler conditions could prompt early preparation by households and farmers alike, especially in frost-prone areas where crops and livestock remain vulnerable to the cold.

As part of his itinerary, President Stubb visited various development projects and institutions, highlighting Finland’s commitment to supporting Kenya’s growth initiatives. After meeting with his host, President William Ruto, on Monday, May 12, 2025, his third day is also expected to be packed with plenty of activities.

On Tuesday, May 13, 2025, Stubb visited the University of Nairobi, where he gave a speech on geopolitics and the transformation of the multilateral order, followed by a discussion with students.

In addition, the President also attended the closing event of the EU-Kenya Business Forum, where he delivered a keynote speech. The President’s agenda also featured a business seminar organised by Business Finland, focusing on the built environment and the health sector.

He also visited Kawangware, where he learnt about a programme funded by the EU and Finnfund to enhance digital connectivity.

UHC strike

Seth Panyako, the Chairperson of the Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN), is set to issue further guidance today, May 14, 2025, after his announcement on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, warning of looming strikes by UHC staff due to frustrations with the government’s unfulfilled commitments.

Panyako is expected to address the situation again, especially after Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale’s sharp rebuttal to his earlier call for UHC workers to brace for street protests.

In his Tuesday notice, Panyako had warned that nurses across the country may down their tools if the government fails to address longstanding grievances, including the failure to implement the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) and the absorption of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) staff into permanent and pensionable terms.

Speaking to the press on Tuesday, Panyako expressed frustration with the government, accusing it of sidelining the nursing profession despite nurses playing a critical role in the health sector.

“We have been patient for too long. Since this administration came into office, we have not gone on strike. We thought our issues would be addressed, but instead, we have been taken for granted,” Panyako said.

Another key reason why the strike will be the centre of debates today is that Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, held talks with Universal Health Coverage (UHC) health workers’ unions at Afya House, Nairobi, to resolve the ongoing strike.

The Ministry of Health, in a statement issued via social media, noted that Duale had convened the meeting that was attended by officials from various unions to also address the growing concerns among union members.

“Health Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale this afternoon convened a consultative meeting with officials from various Universal Health Coverage (UHC) health workers’ unions at Afya House, Nairobi, to deliberate on the ongoing industrial action and address the growing concerns among union members as efforts continue to find an amicable way forward,” the statement read in part.
