Matiang’i sends message to parents as grade 10 admission begins
By Mustafa Juma, January 12, 2026Jubilee Deputy Party Leader Fred Matiang’i has sent a message of encouragement to Kenyan parents as Grade 10 students report to school.
Taking to his official X account on Monday, January 12, 2026, the former Interior Cabinet Secretary also took a swipe at the government over what he termed as growing pressure on families caused by rising education costs.
Matiang’i wished Kenyans a productive week ahead and singled out parents whose children are joining Grade 10 under the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), acknowledging the financial strain many households are facing.
“Fellow Kenyans, on this fine Monday morning as we begin a new week, I wish you all a successful and productive week ahead. To parents of Grade 10 students admitting their children today, I pray for God’s favor and provision, especially in meeting school fees, an area where this administration continues to strain our education system, making it increasingly untenable for many families,” Matiang’i stated.

The former CS, who oversaw major reforms in the education sector during his tenure, appeared to criticise the current administration, arguing that its policies have placed unnecessary strain on the education system. He warned that, unless addressed, the situation could make access to quality education unattainable for many Kenyan children.
Matiang’i’s plea to the clergy
Matiang’i also called on religious institutions to play an active role in supporting the nation during what he described as a difficult period.
He further struck a hopeful tone, saying that despite the hardships facing Kenyans today, the country can still chart a better path beyond 2027.
“I encourage the church to continue praying for our nation during this challenging moment. By God’s grace, we shall overcome these difficulties and build a better, more just country beyond 2027,” he stated.

Senior school transition
The Grade 10 admission marks the country’s first attempt to introduce structured academic pathways at the senior secondary level, aiming to equip students with skills for higher education or the workforce.
Senior school, comprising Grades 10 to 12, follows pre-primary, primary (Grades 1–6), and junior school (Grades 7–9). Learners entering Grade 10 will typically be between 15 and 17 years old.
Unlike the previous education system, senior school will provide learners with the opportunity to specialise in areas that align with their abilities, ambitions, and emerging talents.
