Matiang’i orders dusk-to-dawn curfew in Lamu after deadly attacks
Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i has ordered a 30-day dusk-to-dawn curfew in Lamu county following the recent attacks that saw seven people lose their lives.
In a statement released on Wednesday, January 5, Matiang’i said the attacks witnessed in Widho Sub-location, Majembeni Location in Lamu County led to the destruction of private property and unsettled residents in the affected surrounding areas.
“In accordance with Section 106 (1) of the National Police Service Act, 2011, the National Security Council has declared the following parts of Lamu County as Disturbed Areas and ordered a dusk-to-dawn curfew for a period of Thirty (30) days effective Wednesday, January 5, 2022,” the statement read in part.
The affected areas include Majembeni location, Ndamwe Location and Mkunumbi Location in Lamu West Sub County.
Others are Pandaguo, Binde, Witu and Hamasi Locations in Witu Division.
Bomani, Pongwe, Mpeketoni, Bahari, Mapenya and Hindi locations are also affected.
So far, police are holding seven people in custody in connection to the Sunday night and early Monday morning attacks after arresting four suspects yesterday.
Police say one of the victims was shot dead while another was beheaded and four others were killed after they were burnt alive in their houses.
The seventh victim was burnt beyond recognition at Bobo-Hindi area on Tuesday.
Addressing the press, Lamu County Commissioner Irungu Macharia said an operation is ongoing to nip the root cause of the attacks in the bud.
