Matiang’i meets former US diplomat Jendayi Frazer for high-level talks
By Sharon Atieno, July 9, 2026Jubilee Deputy party leader and former Cabinet Secretary (CS) Fred Matiangi has held high-level talks with former United States Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Dr. Jendayi Frazer, describing the meeting as an enriching engagement focused on Kenya and the wider region.
In a statement shared on his social media platforms on Wednesday, July 9, 2026, Matiang’i said he was honoured to receive the seasoned American diplomat during a courtesy call, praising her vast diplomatic experience and reflections on the country’s future.
“This morning, I had the distinct honour of receiving Dr. Jendayi Frazer, former U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs and former United States Ambassador to South Africa, during a courtesy call,” Matiang’i said.
He added that the discussions offered valuable perspectives on Kenya’s development and regional affairs.
“I sincerely appreciate Dr. Frazer’s insightful and positive reflections on Kenya and the broader region. Her wealth of diplomatic experience and thoughtful perspectives made for a highly enriching and educative engagement,” he stated.

Focus on Kenya and the region
Although Matiang’i did not disclose the details of their discussions, his remarks suggested that the engagement centred on Kenya’s governance, regional dynamics and broader issues affecting the African continent.
Frazer is one of the United States’ most experienced diplomats on African affairs, having previously served as Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs and as U.S. Ambassador to South Africa.
Her visit comes at a time when Kenya remains at the centre of regional peace and governance conversations, with political activity also gathering pace ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Growing diplomatic engagements
The meeting comes just days after former President Uhuru Kenyatta hosted United States Chargé d’Affaires Susan Burns at his Ichaweri home in Gatundu, Kiambu County.
Uhuru’s office said Burns paid him a courtesy call as the former Head of State continues to play a prominent role in regional diplomacy through his peace facilitation efforts in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
The former president has remained actively engaged in the East African Community-led Nairobi Peace Process, where he continues to facilitate dialogue aimed at restoring stability in the conflict-hit region.
International interest in Kenya
The latest diplomatic engagements involving senior Kenyan leaders underscore sustained international interest in Kenya’s role in regional peace, governance and economic development.
The courtesy calls also come amid growing global focus on Africa’s strategic importance in diplomacy, technology and security, with international partners increasingly engaging Kenyan leaders on regional stability and development priorities.
Matiang’i’s meeting with Frazer adds to a series of high-profile engagements involving Kenyan political figures and senior foreign diplomats, highlighting Kenya’s continued position as a key diplomatic and strategic partner in the region.
