A fresh showdown looms between matatu operators and Nakuru County government after the assembly approved a bill allowing Public Service Vehicles back to the Central Business District (CBD). 

The motion tabled by Menengai East Member of County Assembly (MCA) Wilson Mwangi was unanimously supported and approved by the Ward Reps. 

Mwangi noted that the continued ban of matatus from the CBD was negatively affecting businesses.

He said the standoff between Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui and matatu industry players was unhealthy adding that there was need for intervention. 

On Wednesday, the assembly approved that each of the 86 saccos in Nakuru be allowed to have at least two vehicles in the CBD as a short-term plan. 

“As we await on a long-term plan to have an ultramodern terminus, we need to have plans that do not negatively affect business,” said Mwangi. 

This is however not expected to go down well with the Executive who have insisted that no matatus will be allowed in the CBD. 

Central Rift Matatu Owners Association Chairman Stephen Muli said the decision by the assembly to allow them back was a right move.
