Reactions to Raila’s heckling in Kisii
More reactions are expected following the tension at Gusii Stadium in Kisii County where former Prime Minister Raila Odinga was heckled by a group of youth during a football match.
The hostile reception on Sunday, March 9, 2025, came just two days after Odinga signed a political pact with President William Ruto, and shortly after he expressed skepticism about former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i’s presidential ambitions.
Odinga, who was accompanied by Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, faced chants of “Ruto Must Go!” and “Raila Must Go!” but continued with his speech despite the disruption.
He later defended his agreement with President Ruto, stating it was meant to unite Kenyans and fight corruption.
“I want to unite all Kenyans and I do not mind critics making noise,” Raila said.
In response to the incident, Kimilili Member of Parliament Didmus Barasa condemned the behavior, describing it as petty and primitive.
“Political violence is a deeply damaging force that undermines the principles of democracy and fosters division within our country. I strongly condemn what is happening in Kisii,” Barasa stated in a message on his X account.
Health update on Pope Francis
The Vatican is expected to provide another update on Pope Francis’s health today as the 88-year-old pontiff continues his recovery from pneumonia after more than three weeks in hospital.
In a message released on Sunday, March 9, 2025, from Gemelli Hospital in Rome, Pope Francis expressed gratitude to the medical staff and volunteers for the ‘miracle of tenderness’ they provide to the sick.
This marks the fourth consecutive Sunday that the Pope has been unable to appear for his weekly noon blessing.
“Brothers and sisters, during my prolonged hospitalisation here, I too experience the thoughtfulness of service and the tenderness of care, in particular from the doctors and health care workers, whom I thank from the bottom of my heart,” read the message.
Doctors reported on Saturday, March 8, 2025, that the Pope is responding well to treatment, with a stable condition, no fever, and good oxygen levels.
However, they noted that his prognosis remains guarded, indicating he is not yet out of danger.
