Maraga visits Albert Ojwang’s family with message of condolences

Former Justice and presidential hopeful David Maraga on Saturday, June 21, 2025, paid a visit to the family of slain teacher Albert Ojwang at their Nyawango home in Homa Bay County.
In a statement shared via his X page, the lawyer stated that he delivered his messages of condolences to the deceased’s extended family.
The former CJ was on his way to the send-off ceremony of his friend and church elder, Elias Ochola.

“On my way from the funeral of my late friend and church elder, Elias Ochola, I took a moment to visit the family of the late Albert Ojwang, at their home in Homabay County. Although Albert’s parents were away from the homestead, I met members of his extended family and conveyed my heartfelt condolences,” a statement from the former CJ’s read in part.
During the visit, Maraga reflected on the heinous death of Albert, saying his demise serves as a reminder of the work that needs to be done to attain a society that upholds justice and the sanctity of life.
Kanja, Amin arrests
He also doubled down on his past call to have those responsible or adversely mentioned in connection with the murder stand trial.
“Albert’s murder will always remain a painful reminder of the work that we all must do to uphold justice, truth, and the dignity of every Kenyan’s life. I reiterate my call for the resignation, removal from office, the arrest, and eventual prosecution of the IG, the DIG, the DCI, and their accomplices for their role and conduct in the murder of Albert Ojwang,” his statement concluded.
Maraga’s visitation comes five days after he came out to publicly condemn the police and the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) agencies over their handling of the blogger’s case.
Speaking at a press briefing in Nairobi on Monday, June 16, 2025, he called for the prosecution of the then deputy police inspector Eliud Lagat, stating that there was enough evidence of his implication in Ojwang’s murder, who died in detention on June 7, 2025.
“There is prima facie evidence that Eliud Lagat directly or indirectly, by himself or through his accomplices, is implicated in the illegal arrest, torture, strangulation, and eventual murder of the late Albert Ojwang. Yet Lagat remains still in office,” he stated.

“It is now time to immediately arrest and institute prosecutions against Lagat. “Integrity demands that we must end impunity as guided by law and moral standing,” he stated.
He further demanded accountability from individuals leading the independent institutions, specifically calling for the arrest of Douglas Kanja, the police inspector, and DCI boss Mohammed Amin, both of whom he chided for lying under oath and their respective roles in Ojwang’s murder.
“The three institutions charged with the maintenance of law and order, the NPS, DCI, and IPOA, have lied under oath. Consequently, they have lost the trust of the Kenyan people. This cannot be allowed to continue. Our institutions of human rights and justice are in serious need of resettling and rebuilding,” he stated.
