Former Chief Justice David Maraga has joined Kenyans in mourning the sudden passing of veteran politician and former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo, praising his early entry into leadership and lasting impact on national politics.

In a condolence message issued on December 14, 2025, Maraga reflected on Jirongo’s long public life and influence across political and entrepreneurial spheres.

He said, “I join Kenyans in mourning the demise of Hon. Cyrus Jirongo, who died early yesterday morning. Mr. Jirongo joined political leadership from a relatively young age and played a key role in shaping the politics of this country, besides entrepreneurship and other leadership roles. In his last days, he remained a vocal leader in the opposition.”

Maraga extended his sympathies to the bereaved family and the country, adding, “I offer my heartfelt condolences to Hon. Jirongo’s family and the people of Kenya. May he rest in peace.”

The message underscored Jirongo’s sustained engagement in public affairs and his enduring relevance in Kenya’s political discourse.

Details of the fatal accident

Jirongo, aged 64, died in a tragic road accident on December 13, 2025, at around 3 a.m. at the Karai area along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway in Naivasha.

He was driving alone in his Mercedes-Benz E350 when it collided with a Climax Coach bus carrying passengers.

According to police reports, Jirongo was travelling from Nakuru towards Nairobi at the time of the crash. He died at the scene, while passengers aboard the bus were treated for injuries.

His body was later transferred to Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi as burial arrangements commenced. The accident has renewed public concern over road safety on major highways, particularly during the busy festive travel period.

Colourful political journey

Jirongo rose to national prominence in the 1990s as chairman of the influential Youth for KANU ’92 movement, which played a key role in political mobilisation during President Daniel arap Moi’s era.

He later served as Lugari MP from 1997 to 2002 and again from 2007 to 2013 and briefly held the Rural Development ministerial portfolio.

In 2017, he contested the presidency under the United Democratic Party. Tributes have poured in from across the political divide, reflecting his wide reach and impact.

President William Ruto described him as “a relentless go-getter” and “generous to a fault,” citing his resilience and entrepreneurial spirit. Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua highlighted his dedication to Lugari constituents, while Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka called him “a bold and charismatic leader.”

Former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i termed his death “a great loss to the nation” for his role in democratisation.
