Politicians allied to the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) have come out to condemn the violent scenes that marred its rally in Kirie Ward, Mbeere North, on Sunday, August 31, 2025.

DCP aspirant in the by-election, Nicholas Mbui, and Manyatta MP Gitonga Mukunji, decried the politics of violence, terming it as detrimental to the future of Kenyan politics.

“It is shameful that people are being used to disrupt our peaceful meetings. You cannot be competing politically and engaging in violence at the same time. To those planning violence, this is a sign that they have sensed defeat in the upcoming elections. Mbui should now prepare to be sworn in as the Mbeere North MP on November 27, 2025,” Mukunji stated.

During the event, DCP supporters, consisting of women and children, sustained serious injuries after a section of the crowd started hurling stones and dust at the leaders.

Taking to his Facebook page on Monday, September 1, 2025, Mbui condemned the incident while blaming the execution of the violence on a key official in government, among others.

“I wish to condemn the violence against my supporters in Kirie market with the strongest words possible. My nephew, Venenzio Mwathi Nthiga, sustained serious injuries to the head and shoulders. Several women, youths, and men were injured; some were treated at Kirie dispensary, and some were referred to Ishiara Level 4 hospital,” he stated.

The aspirant further stated that such violent acts would not derail their quest to clinch the parliamentary seat.

“To my supporters, our opponents have started sensing defeat too early and have resorted to violence and disruptions. We are going to overcome. We are winning this by-election by a landslide. Be informed that no amount of intimidation will stop us from forging ahead.”

The foregoing comes as the date for the decisive by-election that is expected to pit Rigathi Gachagua’s new outfit against the government in the region draws close.

In a bid to strengthen its base ahead of the polls, DCP recently announced the opening of applications for aspirants seeking to contest the upcoming by-elections on its ticket.
