The National Police Service has launched a manhunt for three terror suspects, who escaped from Kamiti Maximum Prison yesterday morning.

It is not clear how they made their way out of the highly guarded facility.

According to NPS, Musharaf Abdalla Akhulunga alias Zarkawi, Mohammed Ali Abikar and Joseph Juma Odhiambo escaped at around 1am by removing part of the wall to their cellblock.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has offered Sh60 million to anyone with information that may lead to their arrest.

Akhulunga, also known as Alex or Shukri, was on September 30, 2012 jailed over participation in a foiled attempt to conduct a terrorist attack targeting Parliament Buildings.

He was charged with possession of explosives, ammunition and firearms. He hails from Ekero area in Mumias, Kakamega county.

“The National Police Service informs members of the public that Musharaf is dangerous and appeals for any information regarding his whereabouts,” police said. 

Mohamed Ali Abikar was arrested following his involvement with the Garissa University attack that occurred on April 2, 2015. Another bounty of Sh20 million has been offered

Odhiambo alias Yusuf was arrested on November 21, 2019 in Bulla Hawa, Somalia while attempting to enlist with the Al Shabaab terror group.

According to the police, the convict hails from Lukoye, Mumias within Kakamega County.

“The National Police Service informs members of the public that Joseph is dangerous and appeals for any information regarding his whereabouts. The information can be shared to Fichua kwa DCI, call toll free hotline 0800722203 to report anonymously,” the DCI said.

The Commissioner General of Prisons Wycliffe Ogallo together with other senior officers yesterday visited the facility to establish the circumstances that led to the unfortunate incident.

“The matter has been brought to the attention of all security agencies in the country with a view of tracking and apprehending the escapees,” Ogallo said.

Ogallo warned that the three were very dangerous criminals and nobody should provide refuge to them.

“Anybody with information on the whereabouts of the above three named persons should report on this toll free number 999112 or the nearest security agency within reach,” he said. 

 The escape happened barely two weeks after another terror suspect who was released from the facility went missing the same day he was released. Elgiva Bwire who had been convicted on his own plea of guilty was picked by people believed to be security officers and eleven days later, police placed a Sh10 million bounty on him

The appeal by the police came just a day after his lawyer, Prof. Hassan Nandwa was released after 10 days in captivity by unknown people.
