Cabinet Secretary (CS) for Education Ezekiel Machogu has assured parents and school heads that no learning institution will be closed due to lack of capitation.

Machogu stated that the government through the Ministry of Education has been able to give the required 50 percent capitation to all learning institutions in the country.

“No school will be closing due to lack of capitation I want to assure you that during last term we were able to give the 50 per cent required capitation first amount we gave was 20 per cent of the total amount of money required in the calendar year,” he said.

 “Then towards the end of last term, we were able to give another 25 per cent making it a total of 50 per cent of the total amount required for the capitation.”

He added that learning will continue smoothly since the ministry will soon allocate another 30 per cent of the capitation to all secondary and primary schools.

“We are also soon giving another 30 per cent of the capitation to all our secondary schools and our primary schools so normal learning will be able to continue in all our schools both primary and secondary schools,” he said.

Machogu’s sentiments come days after Kenya Primary Schools of Heads Association Chairman Johnson Nzioka said that the situation in public primary schools is getting worse due to a lack of funds from the government.

Speaking on Monday, June 3, 2024, Nzioka went further to state that both Junior Secondary and Primary schools are facing closure due to delay of capitation adding that the government does not allow the school heads to charge extra fees.

“Schools need to prepare materials for exams, the term is coming to an end we hope that the funding will come before the midterm break but if we can get the funds sooner that will go a long way in the stabilization of the situation in schools,” Nzioka said.

According to the reports, the Ministry of Education was allocated by the National Treasury,  Ksh642 billion to the education program in the financial year 2024/25, a Ksh47 billion reduction compared to the current financial year allocation of Ksh689 billion.
