Lobby: Prepare for a Raila, Kenneth deal
Leaders and electorate in Mt Kenya region have been urged to be ready for an Opposition chief Raila Odinga’s presidency in 2022.
Officials of a lobby group dubbed Mt Kenya Youth Caucus, which has been supportive of President Uhuru Kenyatta and Odinga’s March 9, 2018 Handshake, said for the past two years, the former Prime Minister has demonstrated interest to contest in the next elections.
The lobby chair Linford Mutembei said subject to the endorsement of the proposals by the two top leaders to have the Executive expanded, the region, he said, should be ready to support one of their own for possible position of Prime Minister.
Mutembei who spoke to the media at his office in Ruiru town yesterday, said the ODM party leader abandoned his quest for leadership for the sake of peace and common sense in Kenya politics, adding that former Gatanga MP Peter Kenneth would make a good choice for the premier’s post.
The two leaders make a good match, he said. “Raila has not said whether he will seek the presidency or not, but the Mt Kenya region should embrace him if he does so because by helping Uhuru in uniting the county, creating a good opportunity for implementation of Big Four agenda and fight against corruption, he has shown that he has the interest of the nation at heart.”
Key role
“Even if he will not seek a mandate, he surely will be going to play a key role in the 2022 politics and should he join Uhuru in ensuring that he leaves the country in better hands, we should support him,” he said.
Mutembei asked leaders from across the political divide to support the unity bid by the President and the former Prime Minister, saying those opposing it are the hoping to ride on the card of division for the 2022 politics.
