KUCCPS opens 30-day university, TVET inter-institutional transfer window
By Faith Lagat, July 17, 2026The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) has opened a 30-day inter-institutional transfer application window for students placed in universities and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions for the 2026/2027 academic year.
In a notice shared on its official X account on Friday, July 17, KUCCPS invited students wishing to change institutions to submit their applications through the student portal.
“Were you recently placed in a university or TVET programme and wish to move to a different institution? Take advantage of the current 30-day inter-institutional transfer application period. Log in to KUCCPS student’s Portal and apply for a transfer,” the placement agency said.
According to KUCCPS, the transfer window is open to students from the 2023, 2024 and 2025 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) cohorts, subject to programme cut-off points and availability of vacancies in the institutions they wish to join.
Applications will close on August 14, 2026.
Transfer period extended to one month
The month-long application period follows an announcement by Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba during the release of the 2026/2027 placement results on July 8.
Ogamba said the government had extended the transfer period from the usual two weeks to one month to allow students more time to make informed decisions about their academic paths.
“As part of career alignment, I know that some students who have been placed today may wish to transfer from one university to another. In order to allow adequate time and opportunity for such transfers, this year, we will be extending the transfer window from a period of two weeks to one month,” he said.

The placement service processed 293,869 students into degree, diploma, craft certificate and artisan certificate programmes for the 2026/2027 academic year.
The transfer process allows students to seek placement in another institution without losing their allocated slot, provided they meet the entry requirements for their preferred programme and vacancies are available.
KUCCPS advised applicants to submit their requests through the student portal before the deadline.
Universities begin admissions
The opening of the transfer window comes as universities, TVET institutions and colleges prepare to admit students placed through the 2026/2027 placement exercise.
The Ministry of Education has directed institutions to issue admission letters and joining instructions to successful applicants.
At the same time, the Higher Education Financing portal has been opened for first-time applicants seeking government scholarships, loans and bursaries through the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).
Students have been encouraged to submit their funding applications early to facilitate processing before reporting to their respective institutions.
KUCCPS said successful transfer applications will depend on applicants meeting programme requirements and the availability of spaces in the receiving institutions.
The placement agency also encouraged students to seek guidance before making transfer decisions to ensure their preferred programmes align with their academic qualifications and career aspirations.
Students requiring assistance during the application process have been advised to contact KUCCPS through its official communication channels before the August 14 deadline.
