Koome urges new IEBC team to partner with Judiciary ahead of 2027 polls
Chief Justice Martha Koome has called on the newly appointed Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Commissioners to work hand-in-hand with the Judiciary in preparing the country for the 2027 General Election.
Koome emphasised that credible elections cannot rest on a single institution alone, highlighting the importance of robust inter-agency coordination.
“I held a consultative meeting with the newly appointed Commissioners of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC). I underscored the importance of inter-agency cooperation in ensuring credible, transparent and peaceful elections, while safeguarding the independence of each institution,” she said.

In her remarks posted on her official X account on Wednesday, August 27, 2027, the Chief Justice invited the IEBC to actively participate in the National Council on the Administration of Justice (NCAJ) Working Committee on Election Preparedness. According to her, this platform is crucial for ensuring proper coordination among various players in the electoral process.
“I invited the IEBC to take up its role within the National Council on the Administration of Justice (NCAJ) Working Committee on Election Preparedness to spearhead inter-agency coordination ahead of the 2027 elections,” she noted.
Koome further emphasised the importance of synergy between the Judiciary and the IEBC, particularly in managing disputes and reforms that frequently arise during election cycles.
“I called for close collaboration between the IEBC and the Judiciary Committee on Elections. We further agreed on the importance of coordinated law reform efforts and the fast-tracking of electoral disputes through the courts,” she explained.

Her appeal comes at a time when public trust in electoral processes remains a sensitive issue in Kenya’s democratic journey. The Judiciary, which plays a critical role in resolving electoral disputes, has often been at the centre of political contestation, while the IEBC has repeatedly faced scrutiny over its management of elections.
Koome’s emphasis on transparency, cooperation and timely handling of disputes signals an effort to build confidence ahead of the next polls. “The Judiciary looks forward to a constructive partnership with the IEBC in strengthening electoral justice and upholding the will of the people of Kenya,” she affirmed.
The Chief Justice’s statement sets the tone for a new working relationship between the Judiciary and the IEBC, one that seeks to reduce electoral tensions, address disputes swiftly, and ensure that Kenyans’ votes truly count in 2027.
