KMTC speaks out after student killed in Huruma shooting
The Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) Chief Executive Officer, Kelly Oluoch, visited the Mathari Campus on Tuesday to comfort students and staff following the death of first-year student Sheryl Adhiambo, who was shot dead over the weekend.
Sheryl, 21, died on Saturday evening in Huruma, Nairobi. According to reports, police were chasing a suspected criminal in the Huruma Ngei I area when a stray bullet hit her. At the time, she was helping her mother at a fish kiosk in Kiamaiko, a short distance from their home.
Her death sparked protests in the area, with residents clashing with police late into Sunday. Some locals accused police officers of firing the fatal shot, while police issued a different account of events. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
At KMTC Mathari Campus, where Sheryl studied, students and lecturers gathered to mourn her. The atmosphere remained sombre as peers remembered her as a bright and determined student who had recently completed her exams and returned home before the tragedy.
Oluoch met student leaders and members of staff during his visit. He acknowledged the shock and pain felt across the campus and the wider KMTC community.
“The loss of Sheryl Adhiambo is a heartbreaking blow to our entire KMTC community,” he said. “To her fellow students, please know that in this difficult season, you are not walking alone. The College is committed to providing the psychosocial support needed to help you navigate this tragedy.”
He also conveyed condolences from the institution to Sheryl’s family, friends, and classmates. Oluoch assured them that the college would stand with them during the grieving period.
“The College shares in your pain, and we extend our deepest sympathies to everyone affected by this loss,” he added.

Authorities handle shooting probe
Addressing the circumstances surrounding the shooting, Oluoch said the matter remained under the responsibility of relevant authorities. He confirmed that KMTC had contacted independent oversight bodies and would fully cooperate with investigations.
“In line with our commitment to justice and accountability, the College has reached out to the appropriate institutions and will offer full cooperation as investigations continue,” he said.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched a probe into the incident.
Oluoch also pledged continued support for the Mathari Campus community. He said KMTC would strengthen student welfare services and counselling support to help learners and staff cope with the loss.
