KMPDU secures deal with Trans Nzoia County to promote health workers
The Kenya Medical Practitioners, Pharmacists and Dentists Union (KMPDU) has reached a comprehensive agreement with the County Government of Trans Nzoia County following a strike notice issued on February 4, 2026.
In a statement signed by the union’s secretary general, Davji Atellah, on Wednesday, March 4, 2026, the union said the deal was the outcome of structured negotiations led by Governor George Natembeya. The discussions, KMPDU noted, focused on addressing long-standing concerns around promotions, employment terms, and the welfare of doctors working in the county.
“Following the strike notice issued on 4th February 2026, we engaged the county government of Trans Nzoia in negotiations led by H.E. Governor George Natembeya. We are pleased to update our members and the public that we have reached a firm agreement on the following….” Atellah’s statement read in part.

Aim of the deal
The union said that the main goal of the agreement is to resolve promotions that are still pending. By March 17, 2026, 22 doctors who are currently in Job Group N will be promoted to Job Group P, following the County Public Service Board’s schedule.
Doctors in Job Groups P to Q who had already undergone interviews will also receive their promotions by the same date.
Additionally, KMPDU has confirmed that the agreement says that all pending promotions in Job Groups Q, R, and S must be finished within 90 days from February 17, 2026. The union emphasised that the promotions will come with corresponding financial adjustments, ensuring affected doctors benefit from the appropriate salary increments.
According to KMPDU, the agreement also addresses job security, with 12 doctors currently serving on contract terms set to be converted to permanent and pensionable status by March 31, 2026. KMPDU said that this was a big step towards stabilising the workforce and boosting the morale of doctors in the area.

The county government confirmed that the current medical insurance is still valid and promised to get a new, more comprehensive plan before the old one runs out to make sure that doctors can always get the care they need.
KMPDU welcomed the agreement as a product of unity and firm resolve, affirming that it will remain vigilant to ensure full implementation within the agreed timelines.
