Hours after paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the group battling the Sudanese army for control of the country, staged their meeting at the Kenyatta International Convention Center (KICC), Kenya has continued to receive backlash from various sectors.

Speaking at the Senate on Wednesday 19, 2025, Kitui Senator Enoch Wambua, joined other leaders in calling out President William Ruto’s administration for what he termed a diplomatic gaffe.

The vocal senator insisted Kenya erred in allowing the outfit planning to announce a breakaway government to stage their meeting in Nairobi.

While reflecting on the just concluded African Union Commission (AUC) where Kenya’s candidate, Raila Amollo Odinga, was floored by Djibouti’s Mahmoud Ali Youssouf in the chairmanship bid, Wambua maintained that unfurling a scarlet red mat for such outfits would cost the country even in future ambitions.

“What we allowed to happen in our capital yesterday was not right. We must tell the government that it was wrong to allow Rapid Support Forces to pretend to form a government of Sudan in Nairobi,” Wambua said on the floor of the Senate.

“These are the things that are costing us,” he added.

Sudan calls out Kenya’s gov’t

Wambua’s strongly worded remarks came hours after the Sudan Foreign Affairs Ministry reprimanded Nairobi for its actions of allowing RSF to stage their meeting at KICC to form a parallel government.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs went ahead and accused Kenya of breaking international law and said the act promotes the dismembering of a member state of the African Union (AU).

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs regrets the Kenyan government’s disregard for its obligations under international law, the Charter of the United Nations, the Constitutive Act of the African Union, and the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide by hosting the event of signing a so-called ‘political agreement’ between the terrorist Janjaweed militia—responsible for ongoing acts of genocide in Sudan—and its affiliated individuals and groups.

“Given that the stated objective of this agreement is to establish a parallel government on part of Sudanese territory, this move promotes the dismembering of African states, violates their sovereignty, and interferes in their internal affairs. This is, therefore, a clear breach of the UN Charter, the Constitutive Act of the African Union, and the established principles of the contemporary international order,” a press statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Sudan and dated Tuesday, February 18, read.

Nonetheless, Sudan maintained that the actions of RFS did not in a way threaten the Sudanese Armed Forces which the ministry stated was more determined to liberate every inch of Sudan.

The RSF evolved from the so-called Janjaweed militias. The outfit has so far been sanctioned including by the US authorities.
