Leaders in Kisumu County have called on residents to turn out in large numbers to welcome William Samoei Ruto, who is expected to tour the region over the weekend in a visit marked by key development activities, including the launch of a major railway project.

Speaking during a press briefing, Kisumu governor Anyang’ Nyong’o said the county was fully prepared to host the head of state, describing the visit as both historic and significant for the region’s economic future.

The governor, flanked by county officials, national government representatives and Kisumu Central MP Joshua Oron, emphasised the importance of unity and public participation during the president’s tour.

Nyong’o noted that the highlight of the visit will be the launch of phases 2B and 2C of the Standard Gauge Railway, scheduled to take place in Kibos on March 21.

The project will extend the railway line through Kisumu towards Malaba, marking a major milestone in Kenya’s infrastructure development and regional connectivity ambitions.

“The Standard Gauge Railway has been a long-standing dream,” Nyong’o said, adding that while the railway has now reached Kisumu, there are still broader aspirations to link it to neighbouring countries in East Africa.

He expressed optimism that the expansion would eventually enhance trade and integration across the region.

Ruto’s warm reception

The governor further described the project as a symbol of shared vision and progress, noting that it reflects the country’s commitment to fostering growth and unlocking economic opportunities for its citizens.

He also invited residents to witness what he termed a “historic moment” and to accord the president a warm reception.

In addition to the infrastructure launch, Nyong’o revealed that the president will also engage with the Muslim community in Kisumu, including attending a meeting and sharing a meal as they mark the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

He extended his goodwill wishes to Muslims, expressing hope that the season would bring peace, reflection and renewal.

On his part, Kisumu Central MP Joshua Oron welcomed the president’s visit, stating that residents were eager to interact with him and present key development priorities affecting the county.

He underscored the need for closer collaboration between the county and the national government to accelerate growth and improve service delivery.

“Kisumu County is peaceful, and we are ready to receive the President. This visit is important because it is centred on development and taking our county to the next level.” Oron said.

The leaders assured that preparations for the visit are ongoing, particularly at the Kibos site where the railway launch will take place, and urged members of the press and the public to familiarise themselves with the planned events.

President Ruto’s visit is expected to not only highlight ongoing infrastructure investments but also reaffirm the government’s commitment to inclusive development across all regions of the country.
