Kisumu County leaders have strongly condemned a violent attack on Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi, describing the incident as a grave affront to the rule of law and democratic values.

The senator was attacked by a group of armed individuals at a popular café within a shopping complex in Kisumu’s central business district, with reports indicating the incident occurred at a Java House outlet located at Western Mall.

Following the assault, Osotsi sustained injuries and was initially attended to in Kisumu before being airlifted to Nairobi for specialised treatment as his condition required further medical attention.

In a press statement issued by Deputy Governor Mathew Owili on behalf of Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o, the county government expressed shock and outrage over the incident.

Owili termed the attack as “cowardly, criminal, and utterly unacceptable,” warning that such acts of violence threaten not only individual leaders but also the broader fabric of society.

“This attack is not only an assault on a leader but an attack on the very fabric of civility, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence that defines our country,” read part of the statement he posted on his Facebook account.

The county leadership emphasised that Kisumu remains committed to upholding order, dignity, and respect for human rights, insisting that violence has no place in a democratic society.

They called on the National Police Service and other security agencies to act swiftly and decisively to investigate the incident, apprehend those responsible, and ensure they face the full force of the law.

Owili noted that here must be no room for impunity while urging law enforcement to move with speed and precision in handling the case.

At the same time, the county underscored the importance of protecting democratic freedoms, noting that while individuals are entitled to express divergent views, such differences must never justify violence, intimidation, or lawlessness.

“Kisumu County will not tolerate any form of political violence, intimidation, or criminal conduct within its jurisdiction,” the statement read warning that those seeking to destabilise peace through brutality would be held accountable.

The county government also expressed solidarity with Senator Osotsi, wishing him a swift recovery following the attack.

The incident has sparked concern over rising political tensions, with leaders now calling for calm, restraint, and adherence to the rule of law as investigations continue.
