Kingi responds to bribery claims, vows stern action if Senators implicated
By Luke Oluoch, August 20, 2025Senate Speaker Amason Kingi has responded to bribery allegations levelled against Senate members, emphasising the chamber’s commitment to addressing the concerns.
Speaking after a Senate leadership meeting convened on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, Kingi noted that the allegations had raised significant concerns.
“The leadership noted with great concern the allegations of bribery and extortion made against the institution of Parliament and the Senate in particular,” he stated.
However, Kingi highlighted that the allegations lacked specific details, particularly regarding individual senators involved.
Concerned
“The leadership has also noted that the allegations have not included particular material, specifically the individual senators against whom the allegations of bribery are made,” he added.
The Speaker assured that he would take stern action if any senator is found to be involved in bribery or corruption.
“As the Speaker of the Senate, I have not received any complaints or information relating to bribery or extortion or any other corrupt practice involving a senator from a member of the executive, ministries, departments, or agencies of government. If I do receive such a complaint, I am obligated and will take the necessary stern action without delay,” he concluded.
Kingi reiterated the Senate’s commitment to upholding high standards of integrity, stressing that senators are bound by an oath of office to defend the Constitution.
“Senators are called to a high standard; they subscribe to an oath of office to obey, preserve, protect, and defend the Constitution. Consequently, allegations of bribery against senators merit the most urgent and deliberate action and intervention,” he emphasised.
Oversight role
Kingi parted by asserting that the senate will continue its mandate of oversight jurisdiction and summoning governors as the second tier of oversight, as pronounced by the courts.
“On this matter of oversight jurisdiction of the Senate, the Senate cannot yield or concede. Unless the Constitution is amended, the constitutional mandate of the Senate is not negotiable or discretionary. It is a solemn trust invested in the senate, and the senate will continue to discharge it faithfully without fear or favour,” he asserted
