Kilifi Governor Amason Kingi has banned funerals and wedding ceremonies in the county as one way to prevent the spread of the Covid-19.

Kingi also ordered the closure of all bars and palm wine dens, which normally attract a big number of people.

Addressing a press conference alongside Kilifi County Commissioner Magu Mutindika, the governor said whoever wants to marry should not invite anybody but instead formalise the marriage and celebrate alone at home.

“Normally during weddings, it’s our culture as people of Kilifi to go in large numbers, it is the same case during funerals but time has come for us to stop all this,’’ he said.

Raise awareness

Kingi (pictured) also advised residents to keep off restaurants as they could contribute to the spread of the deadly virus.

Formal markets will, however, be allowed to operate with strict supervision by public health officials and enforcement officers to ensure cleanliness is observed.

The governor said open-air markets that operate on specific days within the county should be closed as they normally attract many people.

He said the county government will also begin an aggressive sensitisation campaign all over the county to raise awareness about the virus so that people at the grassroots level  can understand the dangers of the pandemic.
