Residents of Gatundu North have protested the poor state of Igegania Level Four Hospital, the main medical facility in the constituency.

From dilapidated infrastructure, lack of key medical equipment such as a working incinerator, deplorable state of staff quarters, residents say the hospital has run down and urged the county government to speedily salvage its terrible situation.

They regretted that the only facility with children delivery services lacks water and has been relying on bowsers to feed its storage, a situation that has been forcing doctors to compel pregnant women to appear with jerricans of water before they are attended to.

Due to lack of key medical equipment, locals complained that patients are referred to private hospitals for laboratory and X-ray services.

“This hospital is seriously in a poor state. It’s been left as a shell as it lacks the basic qualifications of a hospital facility. If a patient cannot access laboratory and X-ray services here, what is the essence of the facility,” Mary Gathoni, a local, stated.

Worse enough, the residents decried the lack of enough drugs as patients are required to purchase even the basic tablets at chemists located outside the hospital’s main gate.

Speaking to journalists when Kiambu governor Kimani Wamatangi made an impromptu visit at the facility, the locals took issue with former county leadership for neglecting their only main facility and as a result, most of them narrated they have been accessing medical services at Gatundu and Thika Level Five hospitals which are far away.

After visiting the rundown hospital, Wamatangi revealed the facility has been poorly serving over 70,000 Gatundu North constituents as it has only been handling minor medical issues.
