Kenyatta University has appointed John Okumu as its substantive Vice-Chancellor (VC), ending months of uncertainty surrounding the leadership of one of the country’s largest public universities.

The university announced the appointment in a congratulatory message shared on its social media platforms on Monday, July 27, 2026, describing the appointment as a significant milestone for the institution.

“Congratulations, Prof. John Okumu, on his appointment as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of Kenyatta University,” the university stated.

Appointment follows leadership uncertainty

Prof Okumu takes over at a time when the university’s leadership has been the subject of legal proceedings over the appointment of a new Vice-Chancellor.

In May, the High Court extended orders blocking the appointment of a new VC pending the hearing and determination of a case filed by the university’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Prof Waceke Wanjohi.

The court had earlier barred Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos Ogamba, the Public Service Commission and the Kenyatta University Council from filling the vacant position.

The legal challenge followed Prof Wanjohi’s claim that she was the best-performing candidate in interviews conducted for the position on March 25, 2026.

She had argued that she was ranked the best candidate and questioned efforts to lock her out of the position.

Court orders extended

Justice Margaret Njoki Mwangi later consolidated two applications involving the parties and directed that orders issued in the cases remain in force until discharged by the court.

The court also ordered the renewal of Prof Wanjohi’s contract as Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Academic Affairs after the university council had informed her that her contract would not be renewed upon expiry on July 31, 2026.

Her lawyers had accused the university council of using what they described as unfair and unexplained measures to frustrate her bid for the VC position.

The legal dispute had placed the university’s leadership transition under increased scrutiny as stakeholders awaited a substantive appointment.

New VC takes over amid reform demands

With the appointment of Prof Okumu, attention is now expected to shift to the new Vice-Chancellor’s agenda for the university.

He will be expected to steer the institution through challenges facing public universities, including financial constraints, rising student numbers, staff welfare concerns and the need to maintain academic standards.

The appointment also comes as universities continue to operate under pressure from reduced government funding and growing demands for quality higher education.

Kenyatta University said it would celebrate the appointment and wished Prof Okumu “wisdom, strength and success” as he leads the institution towards greater excellence, innovation and global impact.

His appointment marks a new chapter for the university as it seeks to strengthen its leadership and focus on its core mandate of teaching, research and community service.
