Kenya Railways has warned that illegal structures along key Nairobi rail corridors will be removed to pave the way for new stations and a spur line ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

In a statement posted on its X account on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, the corporation said the developments are part of preparations to ensure smooth transport for fans and commuters during the tournament, which Kenya will co-host with Uganda and Tanzania.

“The Government of Kenya is making requisite preparations to host a successful tournament,” Kenya Railways stated.

Evictions underway

The corporation announced that all encroachers on the railway corridor have been advised and issued with notices to vacate the land ahead of construction.

“To this end, all encroachers were advised and issued with notices in good time to vacate the railway corridor to pave the way for the construction of the station and spur line,” the corporation stated.

It further issued a stern warning that any illegal structures or property found on the corridor will be demolished or removed without further notice and at the encroacher’s risk and cost.

“Kenya Railways is in the process of evicting all encroachers as we repossess all the land that has been identified for the above-mentioned development. Therefore, take note that any illegal structures/property found on the corridor will be demolished and/or removed without further notice and at the encroacher’s risk and cost,” the corporation warned.

New railway infrastructure

The project includes a new railway station adjacent to Nyayo National Stadium and a spur line connecting Nairobi Central Station through Nyayo Stadium, Kibera, and Raila Odinga International Stadium.

Nyayo National Stadium will also serve as a training centre during AFCON 2027, with matches being held at Raila Odinga International Stadium, formerly known as Talanta Sports City Stadium and Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Kenya Railways said the new infrastructure will provide safe, reliable, and affordable transport options for tournament attendees while enhancing Nairobi’s commuter network.

“These developments aim to guarantee ease of movement and ensure Kenya hosts a successful AFCON tournament,” the statement added.
