Kenya partners with global surgeons for complex reconstructive surgeries

Kenya is working with international medical experts to expand access to specialised reconstructive care for children, following a meeting held in Nairobi on Thursday, February 5, 2026. The Ministry of Health said the partnership aims to support children with complex conditions and strengthen skills within the local health system.

The Ministry of Health explained who led the engagement and where it took place.

“The Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, hosted a delegation from Emergenza Sorrisi ETS, led by the organisation’s President, Fabio Massimo. The engagement was held alongside the Principal Secretary for Higher Education, Beatrice Inyangala,” the statement reads.

The ministry outlined the background and global work of the visiting organisation.

“Emergenza Sorrisi ETS is a Rome-based non-governmental organisation internationally recognised for its humanitarian surgical missions supporting children with facial deformities, complex craniofacial malformations, and burn scars. The organisation brings together a network of over 370 volunteer medical professionals drawn from various surgical and clinical disciplines,” the ministry wrote.

The ministry also highlighted the ongoing medical mission currently underway in the country.

“The organisation is currently undertaking a specialised surgical mission in Nairobi in collaboration with the Kenya Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (KASPRAS), focusing on life-changing reconstructive procedures for children in need,” the ministry wrote.

The discussions during the meeting focused on strengthening future collaboration and improving local capacity.

“Discussions during the meeting centred on strengthening collaboration between the Government of Kenya and Emergenza Sorrisi ETS, with particular emphasis on knowledge transfer, capacity building within the local health system, and exploring opportunities to expand access to specialised reconstructive surgical care for vulnerable children across the country,” the statement reads.

The ministry further noted the presence of senior officials and technical experts during the engagement.

“The meeting was also attended by senior officials from the Ministries of Health and Education, representatives of KASPRAS, and technical officers involved in surgical training, child health, and specialised care services,” the statement reads.
