Kenya mourns death of former Harambee Stars player and KDF hero Sergeant Major Koranga

The Kenya Defence Force (KDF) has mourned the death of former Harambee Stars player and Defence Force Sergeant Major (DFSM), Warrant Officer Class One Elijah Koranga just four months after exiting the force after serving for 40 years.
In a statement on Thursday, February 6, 2025, KDF remarked that even in his death, Koranga’s selfless contributions to the military will forever be cherished.
“With heavy hearts, we remember and honour the life of Warrant Officer Class One (Retired) Elijah Koranga, former Defence Forces Sergeant Major. A devoted servant to our nation, his 40 years of steadfast commitment and exemplary leadership touched the lives of many,” KDF said in a statement.
Koranga’s courageous legacy
“Though we mourn his passing, we celebrate the enduring legacy he leaves behind-a legacy built on courage, integrity, and selfless service. His contributions to the Kenya Defence Forces and to our community will always be cherished.”

During his farewell party on October 4, 2024, Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) General Charles Kahariri praised WO1 Koranga for his amiable personality and his all-around success in military duty, sports, and family life, acknowledging his 40 years of selfless service to the nation of Kenya and to KDF.
He recalled their time working closely together, noting that Koranga had been a source of encouragement, motivation, and sound advice.
WO1 Koranga retired after 40 years of service, having enlisted in 1984. He served in various units and capacities, including the 3rd Battalion Kenya Rifles (3KR), 2 Brigade, and the Kenya Military Academy, before being appointed Army Sergeant Major and later DFSM in 2019.
Koranga was part of the Harambee Stars squad that featured in the 1992 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals that were hosted in Senegal.
Highest ranking position
In his capacity as DFSM, Koranga’s main role included advising the Chief of Defence Forces on matters affecting the KDF service members.
He was replaced by Bwana Haji who previously served as the Kenya Navy Sergeant Major. The Defence Force Service Major role, the highest-ranking position among non-commissioned officers in the KDF.
Koranga’s farewell ceremony was attended by senior military leadership, including Commander Kenya Army, Lieutenant General David Tarus, Commander Kenya Air Force, Major General Fatumah Ahmed, Commander Kenya Navy Major General Paul Otieno, Assistant Chief of Defence Forces in charge of Operations, Doctrine, and Training (ACDF OPD&T) Major General Fredrick Leuria, retired DFSMs, Senior Officers, Officers, and Service Personnel, along with their families.
