Kenya Met forecasts heavy downpour in Nairobi on March 13

By , March 12, 2026

The Kenya Meteorological Department has warned residents of Nairobi and nearby counties to prepare for significant rainfall expected within the next 24 hours. The advisory comes as parts of the capital continue experiencing changing weather patterns associated with the current rainy season.

In a statement shared on X on Thursday, March 10, 2026, the department says the forecast is important for residents, motorists, and businesses who may be affected by heavy rains, especially in areas that often experience flooding or traffic disruptions during intense downpours.

“Nairobi Metropolitan Rainfall Update, March 12, 2026, moderate to heavy rainfall expected in parts of Nairobi and surrounding counties over the next 24 hours (09:00 today – 09:00 tomorrow),” the department stated.

The department urged members of the public to follow official updates closely as conditions may change depending on how the weather systems develop during the day and overnight.

“Official sources only, stay updated,” part of the department’s statement on X reads.

Heavy rainfall in Nairobi often leads to slow traffic, flooded roads, and challenges for people travelling to work or school. Residents living in low-lying areas are advised to remain alert during such forecasts, as sudden downpours can quickly overwhelm drainage systems in some parts of the city.

Experts say rainfall alerts from the national meteorological agency are meant to help people prepare early and reduce the risks associated with severe weather conditions. These updates are especially important for commuters who rely on public transport and those who drive through areas prone to water accumulation.
