Kenya Met Department  appoints Edward Maina Muriuki as acting director of meteorological services

The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change and Forestry, through the State Department of Environment and Climate Change, has announced the appointment of Edward Maina Muriuki as the Acting Director of Meteorological Services at the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD).

In a statement on Monday, October 6, 2025, KMD revealed that Muriuki, who joined the department in 1991, brings over three decades of expertise in meteorology, hydrology, and environmental leadership. 

Furthermore, the department disclosed that Muriuki holds a Master’s Degree in Water Resources Engineering from the University of Dar es Salaam, a Postgraduate Diploma in Hydrology, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Meteorology from the University of Nairobi.

Throughout his career, he has served in several key technical and leadership positions at KMD, including  Senior Assistant Director across various divisions, Deputy Director of Technical and Support Services, Deputy Director of Forecasting Services, and Principal of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Regional Training Centre – Institute for Meteorological Training and Research (IMTR) in Nairobi.

Speaking following his appointment, Muriuki expressed gratitude and commitment to advancing the science of meteorology and hydrology in Kenya.

“This appointment marks a significant milestone in my career as a Meteorologist. I look forward to enhancing the science of Meteorology and Hydrology in Kenya, and to working closely with our staff and partners to improve weather and climate service delivery in the country,” he stated.

His leadership comes at a crucial time as Kenya continues to strengthen its participation in the global “Early Warning for All” initiative, which seeks to ensure that every person on the planet is protected by early warning systems by 2027.

“Congratulations, Mr. Muriuki, on your new appointment!” the department added.

KMD

KMD is the national authority responsible for providing accurate and timely weather and climate services. 

The department is dedicated to delivering reliable early warning information to help safeguard lives, protect property, and promote environmental sustainability.

 KMD operates under the framework of Executive Orders of the Government of Kenya and is recognized by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) as the sole authoritative source for severe weather and extreme climate information in Kenya.
